Situated few miles to the north of Orlando, Altamonte Springs is a city in Seminole County, Central Florida. The present location of Altamonte Springs was first settled circa 1870 by Dr. Washington Kilmer of Cincinnati, who named it Altamont (without the "e"). The name was changed to Altamonte Springs in 1882 by the Altamonte Land, Hotel and Navigation Company. The name "Altamonte" is Spanish for "high hill." The main section of the community was developed between Maitland and Longwood Avenues (now known as Ronald Reagan Boulevard), along Altamonte Avenue (current State Road 436). Altamonte Springs was incorporated in November 1920.
The population of this community experienced tremendous growth in the 1970s. It surged from less than 4,400 in 1970 to more than 22,000 by 1980. A 2015 estimate showed that 43,159 lived there. Altamonte Springs boasts a somewhat high number of college-educated individuals. The percentage of its adult residents with at least a Bachelor's degree is estimated to be higher than the national average. The city center, featuring large-scale apartment buildings and high-rise condominiums as well as mixed-use shops, serves as the venue of several events and festivals year-round.
