Learn More About Newnan, Georgia

Newnan is a city located in the Coweta County, Georgia, about 40 miles from Downtown Atlanta. As part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area, the city has had a tremendous growth in population in the past two decades, going from 16,000 people in 2000 to over 41,000 in 2010.

The city of Newnan was founded in 1828, named after General Daniel Newnan, who would later become Georgia Secretary of State and a US congressman. Like a large part of Georgia, that entire region had once been inhabited by Native Americans - in this case, the Creek Indians - who ceded their land to the State in the early 19th century.

Once it was established as a town and county seat for the Coweta County, Newnan started to attract an influx of doctors, lawyers and merchants, who ended up settling in the newly developed town. Due to a thriving cotton industry, Newnan was a prosperous city in the 19th century, but it relied heavily on slavery. To this reason, the city is today home to the Coweta County African American Heritage Museum, that tells the history of African Americans who lived in the region.

Newnan also has several parks and an exciting arts and entertainment scene. The city has six historic districts with beautiful Victorian mansions and other buildings in antebellum style. The city has also been experiencing a rapid commercial development, with its newest addition being Ashley Park, an open-air shopping mall near I-85.

With hot summers and cold, snowy winters, Newnan is thriving as a city in fast development. It is crossed by U.S. Route 29 and has the Newnan-Coweta County Airport, which provides air service and flight training. The cost of living in town is 7.20% lower than other cities in the United States, which makes Newnan a great choice for someone looking to settle in a quieter place.

The proximity to Atlanta provides the movement and luxuries of a big city nearby, but residents are still able to come home to the peace and quiet of a smaller town. The average annual income per household is approximately $51,000.

Newnan is also served by an extensive educational system in the Coweta County, with nineteen elementary schools, six middle schools, and three high schools. The city is also home to three higher education institutions, including the University of West Georgia and Mercer University.
