Learn More About Stockbridge, Georgia

Stockbridge, Georgia

Settled in 1829, Stockbridge is a city in the northern section of Henry County in the state of Georgia. It is located about 20 miles south of Atlanta and is part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. It covers an area of slightly over 13 square miles. The community was granted a post office in 1847 and was in 1895 incorporated as town. It was incorporated as a city on August 6, 1920.

A degree of uncertainty surrounds whom the city was actually named after. An account has it that Stockbridge was named for Levi Stockbridge, a professor who frequently traveled through and stopped in the town in its earlier days. The traveling professor was believed to have been so much loved and respected by the residents that they named their community after him. But another account has it that Stockbridge was named for Thomas Stock, President of the Georgia State Senate and State Surveyor in the 1820s. The Levi Stockbridge angle has, however, become the one accepted by many after further clarification recently.

Stockbridge had a population of 25,637 people in 2010, which was more than two and half times the total count in the 2000 census. This means the city now has significantly higher population density than the 900 people per square reported in 2000, when the total housing units was 3,991. As of 2014, the median age of residents was 35 years, slightly lower than the state average of 35.9 years. Median household income was estimated at more than $52,000 in 2013, while the estimated per capita income was $21,380
