Slidell was founded in 1882 on the North shore of Lake Pontchartrain when the construction of the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad was taking place. The nickname for the railroad is N.O.N.E. This railroad system connected New Orleans to an area in Mississippi known as Meridian. Slidell got its name from the Confederate ambassador of France, John Slidell. In the early 1900’s Slidell constructed several major interstates. Interstate 10, Interstate 59 and Interstate 12 helped people traveling through Slidell to the Gulf States.
