Ellijay is a city that can be found in Gilmer County, Georgia. Ellijay is also the county seat of Gilmer County. At the time of the 2010 census the population here was 1,619. Six years later in 2016 a non-census related poll was taken that showed that the population had only increased by 75 bringing the grand total of residents in Ellijay to 1,694. Back in 1832 Gilmer County was cut from Cherokee County then two years later in 1834 Ellijay became the county seat. Back during this time Ellijay was a small, remote mountain community up until the Marietta and Northern Georgia Railroad made its way here in 1884. When this happened, there was a boom in the timber industry, but the area remained mostly isolated for almost 100 years. In 1991 the Zell Miller Mountain Parkway was completed which helped make Ellijay a more well-known area. The name Ellijay comes from the Cherokee word “Elatseyi” which means “new ground.” There are other sources that claim it means “green place.” According to the United States Census Bureau, Ellijay located at the center of Gilmer County and is a total of 3.6 square miles with all of that being land. When it comes to the weather here in Ellijay it is categorized is as “Humid Subtropical.” This means that the summers here will be warm and somewhat muggy due to the humidity. The winters on the other hand will very cold and short. It is also partly cloudy here year-round. The temperature here varies greatly throughout the year. The winter months can see temperatures dip down to 18 degrees or less and the summer months can see temperatures soar up to 92 degrees. The hot season here lasts for a little less than four months. From the end of May until mid-September the daily average high is just about 80 degrees. The low for this time is 67 degrees. The warmest time of the year here is during the month of July when the daily average high is 87 degrees. The cool season on the other hand lasts for less than three months. From the end of November until almost the end of February the daily average high is around 56 degrees. The low for this time is 32 degrees. The coolest time of the year here is during the month of January. You can except to see close to 60 inches of rain per year here in Ellijay. This number is close to 20 inches higher than the national average of just under 40 inches. One of the perks of living here is that there is less than 4 inches of snow fall per year here despite the temperatures dropping to below the freezing mark for a decent part of the winter.

Apple Festival –
Gilmer County is known as the “Apple Capital of Georgia.” Every October there is an apple festival held here. The Georgia Apple Festival is held right here in Ellijay and has taken place every year since 1971. People come from all over the state of Georgia to this festival. There are over 300 vendors and exhibitors at this annual event. You will find everything from candles, woodwork, crafts, food and even a glass blowing exhibit. You can feast on things like apple fritters, apple pies and tons of other apple based confections. A large majority of the vendors for this event come from all over the Southeastern United States. There is also a parade and car show that are held in conjunction with the festival.

Education in Ellijay –
The Gilmer County School District is the school system your children will attend if you live in Ellijay. Within this school district there are three elementary schools. There is the “Ellijay Elementary School,” the “Ellijay Primary School” and the “Mountain View Elementary School.” There are two middles schools. “The Clear Creek Middle School” and the “Gilmer Middle School.” There is one high school within this district and that is the “Gilmer High School.” There is also one alternative school which is “Crossroads.”
