Flowery Branch is situated on the shores of Lake Larnier in Hall County, Georgia. It is one of those cities that sell itself as one for people that desire that sometimes elusive small town flavor. Some of its neighboring communities include Oakwood, Chestnut Mountain, Gainesville and Braselton. It covers a total area of just over 6 square miles and falls into the Gainesville metropolitan area in the state.

 

The origin of the city's name is somewhat shrouded in mystery, with differing accounts on the source. The area where Flowery Branch stands today is said to have been originally known as Anaguluskee, a Cherokee Indian term which is translated as "flowers on the branch." However, another account claims the area's name was instead Nattagasska meaning "Blossom Creek," which happens to be a popular nickname for the city among some long-term residents.

 

Flowery Branch is a very small city of just about 7,000 people, which somewhat gives credence to its claim of having a small town appeal. A 2015 U.S. Census estimate showed there were 6,683 in a community that had just a little over 1,000 people a quarter of a century ago. More and more people are moving into the area, probably as a result of a growing local economy. Flowery Branch is home to many young people, with its median age estimated at just over 30 years.

 

This community ranks among the better educated in the state of Georgia and even in the nation. The percentage of residents with a college degree stands at almost twice the average for all U.S. cities. As a result, many people here work in knowledge-based professions. Many residents working in media as well as designers and artists call this city home. A decent proportion of the local workforce are telecommuters.

 

Flowery Branch has a large stock of housing units that were built relatively recently. These were obviously constructed to cater to the new residents that have moved here in the most recent decades. Many home buyers come here because of the hometown touch of the city, whose notable residents include Baseball Hall of Famer Phil Niekro. A highly popular community within city limits is Sterling on the Lake, which offers a large selection of homes to fit different lifestyles. Harbour Lights is another well-liked community in Flowery Branch, a Georgia Better Hometown Program member.
