Jefferson, Georgia
Located about an hour drive away from Atlanta, Jefferson is a small city in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is the county seat of Jackson County. The city, which has all of its total area of about 19 square miles made up of land, comprises of four neighborhoods. It stands at an elevation of about 230 meters above sea level. The total number of residents stands at more than 10,000.
This area was originally an Indian settlement known as Thomoccogan. Founded in 1800, Jefferson was named for former President Thomas Jefferson. It was incorporated as a town in 1806, the same year it took over from Clarkesboro as the seat of Jackson County. But the name hasn’t always been Jefferson. It was incorporated as a town under the name Jeffersonville, which was later changed to Jeffersonton. The present shorter version was adopted on June 30, 1824. The City of Jefferson was incorporated in 1896.
In the four decades from 1930, the population of the city swung between rises and declines. However, it has experienced steady rise since the 1980 census, growing almost 60 percent between 2000 and 2006. There were a total of 9,432 people here as of 2010, but a 2015 estimate showed 10,195 people lived in Jefferson.
The bulk of the housing units in the city were built rather recently, reflecting the influx of people that has been seen in the area in recent years. This may also be taken as a sign of growing local economy. Traditions of Braselton is arguably the most sought-after community in Jefferson. It is home to the Traditions of Braselton Golf Course, which has lush, gently rolling hills as backdrop.
Jefferson is served by the Jefferson City School District. The district caters to children in kindergarten to grade twelve. There are elementary, middle and high schools within the city, whose public school system has more than 1,500 students and over 100 full-time teachers. Overall education level is impressively high, with the number of residents aged 25 or above who are college-educated higher than the national average.
Many families will find Jefferson a great place to live. Aside boasting a significant number of adults with at least a Bachelor’s degree, the city has a decent school district. A high number of families live here as well, with about 55 percent of the population said to be made of married people. Jefferson also has a very low rate of crimes, lower than the national average.
