Canton is located in the Cherokee County, 40 miles away from Downtown Atlanta, Georgia. With a population of 22,680 people, the site where the city was founded was the center of where the Cherokee Nation once lived .
The city was founded after the federal troops forcibly removed the Cherokees that had stayed behind and not already moved west in 1833. Although Canton was burned to the ground in 1864 by the Union Army, that small town rose from the ashes and, over the years, went from unsettled territory to a prosperous mill town, known around the world as “Canton Denim”. Even though the factory that manufactured the famous “Canton Denim” - The Canton Cotton Mills - has been closed since 1981, the town has experienced a surge of growth in population, which has tripled in the last 20 years.
Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Canton is divided by the Etowah River, which flows from east to west through the center of the city. With dry, hot summers and cold, snowy winters, the city features several points of interest, especially for those who like history. There are many projects underway for revitalization of the town and visitors and residents alike can enjoy places like the Historic Canton Theater, the Cherokee County History Museum and the Funk Heritage Center, where they can see a large collection of Indian artifacts representing the Native American Indian culture.
The proximity to Atlanta makes it a nice option for those who don’t mind a bit of a drive. The cost of living in Canton is a little higher than the rest of the country by 3%, The average annual income per family is $52,432.
When it comes to education, the Cherokee County - which serves Canton - has several options, including 23 elementary schools, six middle schools, and six high schools. In the surrounding areas, there are also a few higher education institutions, such as Reinhardt University, Chattahoochie Technical College and Kennesaw University.
The town also features a small airport - the Cherokee County Airport - which has a redevelopment project underway, including a 10,000-square-foot terminal, the lengthening of the runway from to 5,000 feet, a new parallel taxiway, instrument landing equipment, and new hangars. The new facilities will also accommodate 200 hangared corporate aircraft and provide 100 tie-downs for smaller aircraft.
