Johns Creek is an upscale suburban city in northeastern Fulton County, Georgia. It is bordered on the northwest by Alpharetta, on the northeast by McGinnis Ferry Road, on the east by Suwannee, and on the south by Chattahoochee River, Berkeley Lake, Duluth and Peachtree Corners. The city is a northeastern Atlanta suburb. Downtown Atlanta lies about 27 miles to its southwest.
An agrarian Cherokee nation used to inhabit the area where Johns Creek currently stands. The region featured trading posts spread along the Chattahoochee River, some of which later transformed into communities. The discovery of gold in the northeast Georgia foothills in the 1820s led to the takeover of the area by the American government and the forced exile of the local Cherokee tribe to Oklahoma.
Among the Cherokees that remained was Sarah Cordery, wife of pioneer John Rogers, after whose son the community was named. Johns Creek was integrated into the newly-formed Milton County in 1858. Fulton County emerged after the other county was dissolved during the Great Depression of the 1930s. The city was incorporated in December 2006.
Before 2010, Johns Creek used an estimated 70,050 as the number of residents for planning purposes since it was not yet in existence as of the 2000 U.S. Census. It had a population of 76,728 as of 2010 census. This was believed to have increased to more than 83,000 in 2015. The city is considered the 10th-largest municipality in the state of Georgia. It boasts of an impressive level of diversity, with people of different races calling it home. As of 2010 census, more than 23 percent of the residents were Asians.
The Johns Creek area boasts of numerous schools, which are managed by the Fulton County School System. These include Abbots Hill Elementary School, Findley Oaks Elementary School, Barnwell Elementary School, Medlock Bridge Elementary School, Autrey Mill Middle School, Taylor Road Middle School, Chattahoochee High School and Johns Creek High School. These schools are constantly ranked among the best in the country. Johns Creek also has a couple of private schools.
The city boasts of a wide variety of recreational facilities. It is a community that will appeal greatly to golf enthusiasts. It has several golf facilities, including the famous Atlanta Athletic Club, which hosted the 2011 PGA Championship, Country Club of the South, and Rivermont Golf and Country Club. The Atlanta Athletic Club also hosted the inaugural edition of Atlanta Tennis Championships in year 2010. Johns Creek is the home of thousands of Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association members.
The beautiful community offers residents opportunities to enjoy nature all around. It has several protected outdoor recreational areas. One of these is the Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center, sited in a 46-acre ravine forest, offering access to a wide variety of local flora and fauna as well as historic buildings and picturesque walking trails which extends more than two miles.
