We hate to sell our Rivendell. It is a unique place that we fell in love with immediately in the summer of 1996 when we first saw it. If it is the place for you, you too will know.
In the Endless Mountains Region on the Wyalusing Creek:
Located in the beautiful Endless Mountains region of Pennsylvania, Rivendell is situated on 11 acres with 700 feet of frontage on the Wyalusing Creek which flows into the Susquehanna River at a distance just right for a good kayaking trip. When we're at Rivendell we keep our kayaks tied up at the bottom of the dock. The two mile ride downstreamfrom the bridge to the front of Rivendell's dock is gorgeous. The creek is full of wild life, herons, owls, all kinds of birds, wood ducks, deer, and even bear. Rivendell is quiet and peaceful, with only one farm down the road beyond it.
Unusually Large Home with Lots of Scope for Imagination:
Rivendell is a large log home, larger than most people are looking for as a family home. We had a large family, elderly parents moving in with us, and we were looking for a place to host retreats. Rivendell was originally built as a home for a drug rehabilitation ministry, so it was built to house large numbers. We re-designed the institutional kitchen into a homier kitchen, added on an in-law apartment, built a pleasant dock overlooking the creek, and errected a barn with its own well and a chicken coop. We raised pigs, chickens, sheep, and cows at Rivendell and had a large vegetable garden, though that has long since disappeared, as has the fencing we once had up for the cows.
Suitable for Retreat Center and Hosting Weddings:
Rivendell is big enough to serve as a bed and breakfast or retreat center. We housed 40 young people there one summer for a camp as well as numerous church retreats. Right now Rivendell is set up with enough beds for thirty. (If you are interested in keeping the beds we are open to selling some of them as well.) It is beautiful enough to host weddings.
Features and a Feel that Make Rivendell an Apt Name for this Home:
Rivendell with its large open Great Room, the library/rec room, a large mud room, a rustic old stage and benches set up on the second story of the barn, a very friendly wrap around porch with beautiful views, and its inviting dock, makes a marvelous family friendly home that creates an environment that is conducive to the peace, healing and rich fellowship found in Tolkien's description of Rivendell, although we freely admit our Rivendell is not as extravagant and stunning as the movie version. But for us, this humble rustic version of Rivendell was a match for Tolkien's descriptions of Elronds House:
"For a while the hobbits continued to talk and think of the past journey and of the perils that lay ahead; but such was the virtue of the land of Rivendell that soon all fear and anxiety was lifted from their minds. The future, good or ill, was not forgotten, but ceased to have any power over the present. Health and hope grew strong in them, and they were content with each good day as it came, taking pleasure in every meal, and in every word and song."
(J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring)
"His house was perfect whether you liked food, or sleep, or work, or story-telling, or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all. Evil things did not come into that valley." (The Hobbit, Chapter 3)
"Weariness fell from him soon in that house, and he had many a merry jest and dance, early and late, with the elves of the valley." (The Hobbit, Chapter 19)
We hope that the next owners of Rivendell will be as blessed as we have been even if they change its name.
