DeLand is located in the state of Florida. It is a city of about 30,000 people, according to 2015 estimates. It is positioned around halfway between Daytona Beach and Orlando and serves as the seat of Volusia County. It is classified into the Deltona-Daytona Beach-Ormond Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area.

 

Founded in 1876, DeLand was originally called Persimmon Hollow after wild persimmon trees growing around the area. It was founded by Henry Addison DeLand, who arrived here in 1876 with the intention of creating an agricultural and tourism town. The baking soda mogul renamed the area after himself. The city was incorporated in 1882 and became the county seat about five years later.

 

There were 9,950 households and 4,631 families living in DeLand as of 2013 census. It had 9,272 housing units, with average density of these calculated at 584 per square mile. Cost of living in the city is lower than national average. DeLand has a diverse economy, which includes agriculture, finance, manufacturing, tourism and government.

DeLand is also home to Stetson University, the oldest private college in Florida. Daytona State College and Florida Technical College also provide higher education in the area.

DeLand has been dubbed the world's skydiving capital by some people, with many skydiving companies based here.
